Succession planning is far more than just making a Will. It could, for example, involve the succession of entities a person may control such as an SMSF, family trusts, private companies and their shareholdings and similar structures. Succession planning is not just planning for death. It may encompass the transfer in control of assets and decision making powers when you lose capacity.
Good succession planning often involves several professionals working together such as your solicitor, account and financial planner. It also requires continued vigilance. An out of date succession plan or out of date succession documents can be worse than no plan or documents at all.
